Haiku

I treated myself to a book of haiku a while back, and I dip into it every now and then. I quickly decided that Issa was my favourite poet rather than the perhaps better known Basho, because Issa clearly had a quirky sense of humour that is in tune with mine, one which often comes out in his poems.

The haiku I’m presenting here isn’t one of his funny ones as such, but it made me smile anyway because it was something someone wrote down and gave me many years ago by way of friendly advice. I always remembered it, and it was nice to come across it again and finally discover its author:

Climb Mount Fuji

O snail

But slowly, slowly
