Word Origins

I’d often wondered where today’s rather strange word came from, even though on reflection I should have worked out the first part of it from what I remember of my schoolboy French.

I was recently reading the diary of an obscure Nottinghamshire apprentice attorney, and he provided the interesting little insight that if you add the old French words for ‘dead’ and ‘pledge’ you have a word for a loan that ‘dies’ when the amount is paid off.

Mort + Gaige = Dead Pledge = Mortgage!
