Problematic Words

I think this one has cropped up before, but a reminder never hurts.

I was reading a report on a football match recently, and in describing a possible foul that would have led to a penalty being given, the journalist said “…but the referee was disinterested.”

I should hope he was, because disinterested means impartial. The word he really meant to use was uninterested in the appeals for a penalty!
